SOLD – Japanese Carved Tanto • Antique Dagger Combat Bowie Knife

The tantō or “short blade” is a traditionally made Japanese knife or dagger.  Initially, the tanto was a functional weapon but evoluved to be more ornate, like this one. Traditionally, the blade is length between 6-12 inches. This one is 7-3/4 inch single edge blade. Although the tanto was designed as a stabbing weapon, the edge can be used for slashing as well.

The sheath has a delicate slightly curve to its form. Both scabbard and handle carved all over with various figures and floral decorations.  Condition: Some separation of to ivory around the guard and oxidation to blade. Total Length in Scabbard: 14-1/2 inches; Scabbard length: 9-1/2 inches; Scabbard width: 1-3/8 inches; Scabbard depth: 1-5/8 inches; Knife length: 12-3/4 inches; Blade length: 7-3/4 inches; Blade width: 7/8 inches; Handle Length: 5 inches; Weight: 17.5 ounces.
